On the evening of July 7th, 2016, an EF2 tornado struck Eureka. At 11th and Main, every structure on the block but one was destroyed. The Eureka Foundation partnered with the City and the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation to clean up the block and build new homes to replace those lost. Two years later, the Foundation formed a subsidiary called Tornado Properties, LLC and cut the ribbon on two new duplex homes with EF5-rated interior tornado shelters to keep residents safe in the event of future storms. More home construction is planned in coming years.
